VIII. Philemon and Baucis: “A Loving Couple…”

Philemon and Baucis, a poor and generous couple, welcomed two weary travelers into their house, giving them what little food and drink they had. The grateful travelers revealed themselves to be Zeus and Hermes in disguise. The two gods transformed Philemon and Baucis’s house into a mansion and granted them a pitcher with an endless supply of drink–wine in Ovid’s account and milk in more modern retellings.
Philemon and Baucis asked the gods for one more blessing: to grow old and die together. After death, the loving couple was transformed into oak and linden trees, their branches forever intertwined.

Marble ceiling scorched by smoke,
stairs like rope and empty rooms,
packed up like provisions.

casting shade like fishing line,
to shelter passerby.
